Should Nail Salons Be Worried? OPI’s New At-Home Gel Kit Has People Talking

OPI just launched GELement™, their first-ever at-home gel polish system, and it’s already causing a little drama, especially in the salon world.

The kit includes:

  • 30 new gel shades, inspired by OPI cult favorites like Bubble Bath and Strawberry Margarita (now called BubbleYUM and Clawberry Margarita)

  • A 4-finger LED lamp that cures polish in 60 seconds

  • A base and top coat system designed for at-home pros and beginners alike

  • Free tutorials through GELiversity™, OPI’s education hub that teaches you exactly how to apply and remove gel at home

The Debate: Is This Cutting Into Salon Business?

I’ve seen the TikToks and comments. Some nail techs are worried that OPI is giving consumers too much power, essentially making it easier (and cheaper) to skip the salon. And honestly? I get it. Salon prices have gone up. A simple gel manicure can run you $60 to $100+, and if you’re doing something like bio gel or extensions, you’re sitting in that chair for hours. Not everyone wants to spend that kind of time or money anymore. So yes, this launch is a great alternative for people who enjoy doing their nails at home. It’s convenient, cost-effective over time, and gives you control over your schedule.

But Will People Stop Going to Salons?

Personally, I don’t think so. And I’ll be real, I’m not someone who’s doing her own nails. I’ve never even been good at painting them, let alone trying gel. So even though I find the salon process long and sometimes draining, this girl will continue going to the pros. I’d rather pay for someone who knows what they’re doing than risk messing it up at home.

At the end of the day, it’s about having options. Some people will love the freedom of at-home gel. Others will keep booking their nail appointments. There’s space for both.
